The Current State of Men in Church
Table of Contents
Why is the modern church full of men who attend not because of a genuine relationship with Christ or the presence of strong, faithful men but because their wives have nudged them, or they’re simply going through the motions? Why does the modern church struggle to attract men? It’s worth pondering if the church itself is to blame.
The American Church’s Suburban Mold
Most contemporary churches present as safe havens with bright colors and gentle voices. Many, including the leaders, seem to wear masks of perfection, competing for prominence and often casting judgment on those who seem out of place. The essence of society’s decorum seems to have seeped into our places of worship, deviating from Christ’s raw, authentic teachings and examples.
The Irony of Modern Men’s Ministries:
Many churches, recognizing men’s absence, launch a “men’s ministry.” Events range from prayer breakfasts to golf outings and retreats. Yet, in doing so, the intended message often misses the mark. The idea of men gathering around in a circle, sipping coffee, and chatting seems far from the biblical warriors they might aspire to be.
The Essence of True Masculinity Let’s set the record straight: There’s no harm in enjoying prayer, breakfasts, golf, or any other activity. But when these activities become a veil, masking men’s innate, divine drive towards true masculinity, there’s a pressing issue. God’s vision for men was to lead, love, and protect, as is evident from numerous biblical examples.
Biblical Exemplars:
David and Benaiah King David, a shepherd boy, showcased immense faith when confronting the giant, Goliath. Then there’s Benaiah, one of King David’s elite warriors, known for his valor and incredible feats in battle. These men were warriors, protectors, leaders, and servants of God’s purpose.
Contrary to some modern portrayals, the True Image of Jesus Our Savior, Jesus Christ, was revolutionary. His teachings and actions were bold, often defying the norms of the time. He wasn’t just a passive figure but the epitome of bravery and rebellion for a righteous cause.
Redefining Masculinity in the Church:
It’s not about every churchman becoming a warrior. It’s about men emulating the heroes of the Bible. Society often misrepresents masculinity, labeling it as toxic. But true masculinity involves submitting to God, loving and leading one’s family, and standing up for what’s right.
